The drones are here!
Recently I went out to Preston Park, one of Teesside’s nicest parks, to get some footage of Nigel from Nigel Rusby Drone Media in action. I wanted to capture some footage of Nigel just doing his thing and show my couples what a drone can offer.
Upon my arrival I was met by Nigel walking towards me with a briefcase (which I assumed contained his drone and not a load of stolen cash from a quick robbery at the local Gregg’s prior to meeting me) and a load of other kit in tow. What struck me immediately was how professional Nigel is at what he does. I suppose you have to be given the fact a drone if put in the wrong hands could be a weapon of mass disruption (as we all saw recently with the Gatwick debacle). Nigel is a fully qualified (and insured) drone pilot, with the skills to fly one and the knowledge and training of what to do if something goes wrong. He completes thorough risk assessments prior to each flight when filming at weddings or commercially to ensure the safety of those around – this is something I was unaware of prior to discussing working with Nigel. I, like many of us, have probably thought about having a go of a drone at some point. Aa a videogrpaher I have often thought about getting a drone so that I could capture a unique vantage point of the stunning venues I am privileged to attend at weddings.
And then it occurred to me! I could not be arsed with the chew of a pilots course the cost of doing one, risk assessments and the time to fly the damn thing which could be precious time capturing moments as they unfold! So, in comes Nigel, who can offer all of the above without any of the stress! Working with Nigel means that I can spend the time on capturing my couple’s big day without any of the stresses of being an amateur drone pilot – also if the drone breaks or crashes into a tree I can blame Nigel! (Its ok though, he has a backup).
I suppose then, the point of this short blog is to both show what can be achieved by a drone and how it can really enhance any wedding film or commercial project but it is also to highlight how much time, training and thought goes into operating a drone. Its not quite as simple as buy one and fly one.
So to all my couples present and future (sorry past couples, I can’t go back in time and add a drone ☹ - if I could I would!) – I invite you to check out what a drone can offer your wedding film.
And to Nigel, I say I look forward to working with you – our first wedding shoot together being April at Yorkshire wedding barn.
I hope you like this short clip I shot just showing a few things that a drone can do.
